Bubble wins a Webby!

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The Richter Scales most recent video, Here Comes Another Bubble, won the Webby award in the Viral Video category. We are so excited! CNN even picked up the story. We’re now trying to figure out who from the group can make it to NYC on June 9 to be at the awards ceremony. We’ve even offered to sing the song live.

If you are in the Bay Area and want to hear the Bubble song live, come see us tomorrow night in Palo Alto!

UPDATE: Kara Swisher wrote a post congratulating us - thanks, Kara!

A fable of YouTube

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Once upon a time, there was a merry band of troubadors called the Richter Scales. They enjoyed making music and entertaining people, never trying to make any money at it.

One day they discovered a new country, YouTubeLand. They thought they might entertain some of the residents there. So they produced a video and sent it over, where some people enjoyed it.

Emboldened, they produced another. This one even more people enjoyed. But one person felt the video was rude to her, and started shouting that the Richters had broken the law. Without ever telling the Richters what she wanted, she used a hammer to banish the video from the land.

Confused, the Richters consulted wizards, and learned that even wizards disagreed on the laws of this new land. They felt bad that some people thought they were rude, though they were new to the land, and there were many other loutish people there already.

After much internal consultation, and encouragement from many native denizens, the Richters decided to venture forth into YouTubeLand again. They took out the objectionable parts, and replaced them with funnier ones. And they made up for their unintentional rudeness by giving credit in a new and clever way, which some in the land hailed as a new standard for virtue.

And everyone lived happily ever after. Well, most people, anyway.

“Dance for the Sun” wins IMA Children’s Music Album of the Year!

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

I wrote a while ago about my sister Kira’s album of kid’s yoga songs. Now the fine judges at the Independent Music Awards have selected her Dance for the Sun album as the winner of the Children’s Music category in their 7th annual contest. Not only that, but her song Caterpillar, Caterpillar (with me singing the bass line) was selected the best Children’s Music song. Hooray for Kira!

Go buy an album, from her site Fireflies Yoga, or from CDBaby. Especially if you have kids.

Bubble Video Takedown

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Our video was taken down from YouTube based on a DMCA notice. We have not see the notice, so we don’t know who or why. Kara Swisher posted in our favor, Valleywag had some criticism. We are in the process of compiling the list of photo credits and posting it, not because some self-styled copyright cops are demanding it, but because we would want credit if someone re-used our work. But we’re not firing off DMCA take-down notices to the several folks on YouTube who have already done it (deliberately not linked here). Nor are we threating physical harm, as some of the commenters on Flickr seem to be advocating. You can tell I’m kinda mad about the way this was handled.

In the meantime, you can still (for now) see it on Yahoo or FunnyOrDie.

Here Comes Another Bubble

Kara Swisher says “pure genius“. Robert Scoble finds it so funny he spews Diet Coke through his nose. This could be my 15 minutes of internet fame! Matt Hempey of the Richter Scales deserves all the credit, he wrote the song, sang the solo, and created the entire video, I just sing the bass line and show up in the video for a few milliseconds. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Updated to version 1.1 of the video.

Fine Line: Sub-Prime Decline - The Richter Scales

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

I sing with the Richter Scales, and we recorded this parody of an Avenue Q song to spoof the credit crunch. The words, arrangement, and video were put together by members of the group - they’re a talented bunch. I just showed up and sang. Enjoy, and share with your friends!

Richter Scales LIVE at CELLspace May 3

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

I recently joined the Richter Scales, a great local a cappella group. Would love to meet any blog readers who are interested in funny, original music as well as some a cappella standards. Hope to see you there!

LIVE at CELLspace

You’ve seen us on YouTube. You’ve read our riveting blog. You’ve heard recordings from our debut album, We Hate A Cappella, on MySpace (if you’re a teenage girl) and iTunes (if you’re her mom). And, of course, you’ve purchased CDs from our web site, RichterScales.com. You may even have seen us serenading the San Francisco International Film Festival or singing the national anthem at Pac Bell Park.

But have you seen us perform a LIVE concert at CELLspace, the community-supported arts center? Heck, no! Because we haven’t done that yet. Lucky for you, on May 3rd, we will, bringing our unique brand of entertainment to San Francisco’s historic Mission district.

The Richter Scales are not just men who sing — we also dance! And by “dance,” we mean “sing some more.” We don’t really dance. Sorry. But we do have a great show planned, including new songs, new soloists, new skits, and plenty of old favorites like the CARA-nominated “I’ve Got Mail.” Don’t miss your chance to see us LIVE, up close and personal, for one night only!

More VC Singing

ValleyWag also picked it up, with their usual snarky commentary. My comment to them was if they didn’t like VCs poking fun at themselves, we can always go back to being pretentious snobs.

Yoga for Kids

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

My sister Kira Willey is a terrific musician, and she just came out with her new CD, so this is an unabashed plug. She wrote an entire CD full of kids yoga music that is designed to introduce young kids to yoga. The best part is, she not only wrote and recorded the songs (which are great, fun and original), but she also has a version of each song where she voices-over the class, so you can do the class in your home. Pictures in the included booklet show you the poses, so it’s very easy. And kids love it!

I confess, I’m not completely unbiased. Not only is she my sister, I also sing bass on three of the songs: Let’s Go to Work, Surfer Mama, and Caterpillar, Caterpillar.

Buy it today. Heck, get one for each of your friends. Makes a great Holiday gift!

UPDATE: her web site is now up - Fireflies Yoga - you can buy it there, since CD Baby doesn’t stock a lot of them.

Singing VCs

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

It’s really Onset’s fault. They put out this great holiday card every year, and for 2004 it was a holiday songbook. Randomly at the ESVCA event this summer I was talking with Tim Chang of Gabriel Ventures, and he mentioned that he sings, and since I sing too, we got chatting about it and somehow hatched the idea that we should sing the Onset songbook. I knew Randy Haykin of Outlook Ventures also sang, since we had both sung (at different times) in the Voices in Harmony chorus, so I got him involved too.

Since I have 4-part mens arrangements of most of these songs, we looked for another singing VC. The one we found, who shall remain nameless, backed out before our first rehearsal, saying he was “too busy”. I tried to argue that this activity would be good for deal flow development and foment strong relationships within the business, so it should count as “work”, but for some reason he just laughed at me.

In the end we brought in David Binetti, who is an entrepreneur considering becoming a VC, and (by the way) a great singer. We had a couple of (short) rehearsals on the roof of our building - we didn’t want anyone to hear us - and spent a little time reworking the lyrics - they were so 2004! We were a little surprised that we actually sounded pretty good. We also joked about picking a name, settling on Up-Round Sound. Other contenders were Top Quartile, Here’s the Pitch, and J-Curve. We decided we weren’t old enough to be the 4X Seniors.

With the songs ready to go, we talked to a number of VC firms (who shall also remain nameless) about singing at their holiday parties. Turns out most VCs are very particular about their holiday parties, and don’t want random groups of people breaking out into song in the middle of them. So, quite a lot of people were deprived of the enjoyment of laughing at themselves while listening to our close harmony renditions. We did end up performing at the Gabriel Ventures party, where we were very well received. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that everyone was 3 drinks in and pretty much everything was funny. We will be singing for the Band of Angels party tonight and that’s probably it for this year.

We have no idea if this quartet will continue to sing together, but we are in the process of acquiring matching socks. Most likely we’ll be available for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and funerals any time all 4 of us are free at the same time, which is approximately as often as pigs fly.

Read on for the lyrics we wrote to Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls (once again, with thanks to Onset for the idea and some of the lyrics). Read the rest of this entry »

Barbra Streisand concert

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

We went to the Barbra concert last night, and it was wonderful. She is such the consummate performer, creating such unbelievably brilliant music, and yet at the same time making everyone feel at ease with her, like she’s really your friend.

She is still the same Babs, with superhuman control and soaring high notes that make you want to leap from your seat. She has that incredible ability to sing softly, making you lean forward to listen, then grow surely and steadily into a crescendo that gives you good bumps. I’m in love.

I will say that she was a bit raspier than I’ve heard in recordings, and she did seem to be slowing down a tiny bit, but she was still 10x better than any other vocalist I know.

The only mar in the program was the awful Il Divo quartet. Imagine 4 opera singers doing Unchained Melody - ugh. They also did Unbreak my Heart, and My Way, and almost destroyed both songs for me. They were slightly better as a backup band for Barbra, but not much.

I found the Bush impersonator quite funny, and the material was obviously quite recent given the election less than a week ago. Barbra shows her true colors as a left-leaning Democrat.

I thought the mix of songs was great, with a number that I hadn’t heard, but still enough of the old favorites to keep the audience roaring. I know it was expensive, but I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
